will gl1200 rims fit on gl1100

Postby evesdropper » Mon Mar 09, 2015 10:35 pm

I have the option of buying the rims and front forks off a gl1200.
The forks and rims look like the ones on my buddies 83 gl1100.
Mine being a 82 the forks would be a upgrade as well as the rims.
If they do fit will I need the rotors and calipers as will.
I known the 83 will fit but not sure about the gl1200.
Thank you Mark

Get the entire triple tree and it will bolt on. IIRC, it even uses the same steering stem bearings.
Without replacing the tree, the 84 fork tubes are fatter and won't fit your 82 tree. Might have a fender fit issue too.

The TRAC anti-dive is a nice upgrade. I put the 83 forks/wheels on my 82.
I retrofitted my 82 calipers, since the 83's were linked (and different size pistons) and I didn't want that. You'll need to do the same.

Not sure if the rear wheel is a direct fit. I thought the 1200's had a 15" rear wheel.
If so, and it fits, that should hot rod your 82, with the smaller diameter rear tire = numerically higher effective gear ratio.
Quicker off the line, lower top speed (potentially). It will make your cruising speed RPM higher than before.
For an around town bike, that's an upgrade. For a highway long-distance cruiser, not so much. MPG will likely be lower than before.
When all else fails, RTFM!
