Sad...'82 GL1100 Overheat Damage

Postby turtleflats » Tue Mar 10, 2015 7:45 pm

Sad...My '82 GL1100 overheated and blew, or warped a head, etc. Runs, but dumps anitfreeze into combustion chambers No.1 or No.3, or both. Very afraid motor is trashed. Any advice is greatly welcomed. What's the best plan to replace this engine? Can't scrap this bike; the GF is absolutely in love with it...I'm stuck.

Again, thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Well lets see now.... hmmm 33 year old bike finally blows a head gasket...... its not a big deal to replace it/them . May as well do both while you are pulling wrenches. And check the water pump too. There are very good how to articles listed here on the forum. Everything you need to know and with pictures too. Have a read through and if you need help or have questions we are here to help you. 8-)

Many thanks. I can easily pull the head, but not sure what to look for other than visible damage to the gasket.

Thanks again.

You need to check the head did not warp, for that you need a 12" high quality steel ruler and some feeler gauges, if it has warped, chances are it can be skimmed flat again and reused for minimal cost. I would not write the motor off yet, a skimmed head and new head gasket is not a lot of expense..

Firstly you need to get the heads off (I would check both sides to avoid a second failure shortly after fixing the bad side!) and see what damage we are looking at. These old girls can take quite a bit of abuse and be fixed for not much money.

Gary

PS I am amazed that the sidecar wheel does not require a mudguard or something to prevent the passenger from touching the wheel whilst moving!!

Many thanks for the advice and good wishes.

About the sidecar...It's a Czech Velorex which is small, not really practical for passengers not named Fido. The GF and I use it for camping gear, etc. Also, allows us to go in the snow and bad weather.

Pull the head now letting it sit will rust up your cylinders.. as said probably not too big a deal get new gaskets..OEM only, check the head for warp..have a shop do it and skin if needed. change the belts while you are at it and the other head. A one day job.

HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,
