Speedometer housing on front wheel

Postby Mjholi67 » Wed Mar 11, 2015 10:18 am

I just installed a new speedometer cable to my gold wing gl 1000. Everything seemed to fit well but when I took it for a ride around the block I heard a whining sound from the front. I removed the speedometer cable from the front wheel connection and discovered it had snapped off the metal prong in the wheel assembly (where it inserts into the wheel). I thought I made sure it had slipped over correctly but obviously wrong. What is the name of the piece on the front wheel that I now have to replace? Any idea on cost? Thanks for the help

can you post a pic of it? that would help in finding the correct part. are you talking about the metal piece with the 2 tabs on it?

I can get a picture but the correct name for it is speedometer drive or pick up. Located on left side of front wheel between wheel and fork. I found several on line used.

I think he's talking about the little prong inside the drive that fits into the cable end. I don't know that the piece is available separately, you may be looking at replacing the whole speedometer drive, part number 44800-425-013.

They are available used, and it appears that Honda may still have them new, for around $70:

ok, now I understand what he's looking for. I don't think that part comes out of the speedo hub. unfortunately he's gonna have to buy the entire assembly. if he's lucky, he'll find one on eBay for a "reasonable" price.

Thank you folks. I did find it on ebay fairly clean for 22 but it is great to learn there are new options.

What are several sights to look into for possible new parts in the future. Ebay is my first goto but like the idea of new for some options.

I myself like Partzilla. They sell both OEM and aftermarket. Also sell on ebay. There shipping I don't think is to much. I have ordered from them and item's were shipped that day by proirty mail. I spent last night going thru different site's online to compare buying 8 O-ring's and the different site's were from $12. to $22. just for there shipping charge for the 8 o-ring's. Where Partsilla was $5.95 shipping the item's.

I know, aren't some of them absolutely ridiculous? some of them want double, (to triple), of what the actual part costs. example, a 6 dollar part will cost you 18 or 21 dollars shipping .

We sometimes get ads on Ebay for items from USA. Your mail prices are exorbitant! Even compared to ours, where a letter is to cost $1.00, as email has killed off the postal service, and they look like reducing the service to around three days per week!

The worst I have seen is for a part that cost around $50, and postage was $92. Makes you want to check out UK sites, and HongKong as they are considerably less expensive.

The world is not going to finish today, as it is already tomorrow in Australia and New Zealand, and other islands of foreign nations such as Guam and Samoa.
