Wanted to say hello

Postby sportsfreaked » Fri Mar 13, 2015 7:37 am

I am a proud papa of a 1981 GL1100 interstate. I drove it back 180 highway miles with no problem. I did notice some antifreeze on the ground when I got her home. Not a lot but will be investigating that. I need to rebuild the front brake calipers as well but other then that she is in decent shape with only 46,000 miles. Once I learn more about the bike will be happy to help out answering questions with what I have learned along the way. Thanks for a great site!

Thanks to all who answer and help. It is greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on the new bike. Goldwings have an interference type engine so if the previous owner hasn't changed the timing belts recently you need to do it yourself. Very important. Broken belt equals bent valves at a minimum.

That leaking coolant...just a Few drips coming out of a small hole in the front left side of the engine.?
If so...that's the water pump drain hole...a indicator the pump needs to be replaced...it means coolant has gotten past the front seal and through the bearing..

Welcome to the site, be sure to use the search engine here, I enjoy reading back as far as I can just on the posts that interest me... Hope it's not the water pump... Hope it's just a loose hose or drain bolt... :D

Thanks for the welcomes. I now see why these can become addictive and this site as well. A HUGE thanks to the contributors for the DIY articles. I have learned a ton of stuff already. It's been 24 years since I owned a bike. Marriage, kids, 4 back surgeries, and 4 knee surgeries with a replacement had slowed my roll. Feels good to be back on one again and the best part the WIFE likes it :) . She doesn't like all the time I spend reading on this site though :o .

Once I learn my way around the bike I will be happy to help others. It looks like the coolant leak is from a clamp and is no big deal. Once I get the front brakes done (this week) then I will get it inspected and tagged and pay the taxes then dig in for the timing belt change. I will change out the radiator hoses while I'm at it. Thanks again to everyone and their help!

Coolant coming from the weep (telltale) hole on the water pump looks like this:

The clamps on those hoses are not the greatest, you may want to just replace the set of them while you're at it. Have a look at the hose/clamp set Wingovations now has: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=26079
