Testing the stator coils for continuity

Postby auctioneeral » Sun Mar 15, 2015 10:14 am

Why i got this motor rip apart. I figure i would check the stator, which i don't know what I'm doing here at all.
Now from reading and testing each yellow wire to 1-2 1-3 2-1 2-3 3-1 3-2 I should have between 1 and 2 ohms.
All of my doing it like that show 2 ohms.
Now this is the way i have the ohm tester set up by picture is this correct.

Move the dial to the lowest setting for a more accurate reading. Your meter should be on the 200 setting.

Correct.lowest setting.1-2 , 1-3 , 2-3 should read the same.
Next test...set the meter to the highest setting.Pick any yellow wire and measure from it to the stator metal frame.Your meter should show no resistance.this measurement measures the insulation from the wiring to ground.Keep your fingers off the probes. The meter can measure resistance in your skin.

Dingdong is correct! Some manual illustrations may show that stator to be a star or t wound stator. However, that stator is delta wound. If you Google (images) delta wound stator, it may help you understand your readings. Please forgive me if I seem offensive, but this forum it the best place I have found for charging system testing. There is some (not all) YouTube instructions that are wrong. A visual of the windings is also helpful, as any signs of burn-out would indicate a problem. Using strong cleaners such as carb cleaner can damage the enamel coating on the magnet wire. Petroleum base cleaners should be ok.
