Radio & Intercom Question

Postby sportsfreaked » Tue Mar 17, 2015 12:30 pm

I have searched the site and can't seem to find the answer. I have my radio hooked now thanks to the site instruction via the manual. The radio has a Intercom nob at the bottom left. Do you have to have a control unit in order to operate the intercom? A control unit like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/371004935301?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT . I know you need to have the headsets and such as well but curious as to how the setup is suppose to be. As always thanks for the time and knowledge!

Thanks to all who answer and help. It is greatly appreciated!

The link you show is to a Intercom component terminal for a Type II Clarion system. I don't know where some of these sellers get their info from but I see a lot of misrepresented items on the internet. Since you have an Interstate, do you know what radio system you have??
Here is a Type II control head, just for control of radio. No radio and it is listed as Type I stereo.

Wayne thanks for the reply. This is the radio I have http://www.ebay.com/itm/201306821945?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT . According to the install document on this site I have a Clarion 1 model. Is this correct? Thanks.

That is a type 1 and all that is needed is the junction lead kit, 2 headsets, and a switch on the amplifier power wire, yellow, located under the left pocket. The switch is needed to turn off the amplifier so your voice doesn't feed back thru the outside speakers. Honda offered a fancy switch that mounted in the fairing but no longer needed or necessary.

Wayne thanks for the info! So I guess just a couple of those headsets and the jack will do. Does the radio then come thru the headsets? Thanks Ed

Yes the radio will play thru the headset. Also the headsets will work on any year Goldwing if you decide to upgrade. These are the same sets I use on my 2015 GL1800

Wayne thanks for the answers. I am new to all of this so I do appreciate your feedback. I do have one more question. Is this system one that when you talk it "cancels" the radio? Thanks again for your assistance.

When the amp is switched off you will only hear audio in the headset. This is basically what happens when you switch to headset on the other Honda audio systems, it goes to low level or preamp output to the headsets. This is what happens when the 5 amp fuse goes open on the 1500 and you only have audio in the headset.

I probably didn't word it correctly. I should have said does the amp need to be hooked up for the radio to power on? Thanks. I may be sending the radio into your shop Wayne if I can't get this going. I need my music LOL

The amp is only necessary for external speakers and cannot be used with intercom as your voice will be amplified over external speakers and cause feedback squeal. You will still hear radio in headsets without the amp.

Wayne first thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. I have the radio working and it turns on. I do not yet have an antenna for the bike. My question is would I hear static thru the speakers with out the antenna? I'm trying to determine if the speakers work. Do I have to wait until I have an antenna hooked up. Thanks again. ED

Yes, pretty much all you should hear is static without an antenna.

Ok I have tested my speakers and they are good. This may be a stupid question but does the bike need to be running for them to work? I'm wondering if it won't work with out an antenna. Just thinking out loud as I am getting frustrated at this point. :x Thanks as always for the help.

The bike doesn't need to be running, but it does need to be on. You won't get much in the way of radio reception without an antenna.
