Postby urbanmadness » Wed Mar 18, 2015 6:09 pm

I've been trying to find some information on how to adjust the factory throttle lock on my '82 Aspy. Any tips?

Both aftermarket ones I have adjust with an SAE hex key. As far as I know, they're the only non metric fasteners on the bikes :x :x :x

Interesting -I have the throttle lock on my 1980- and having barely used it - didn't even know it was adjustable, or aftermarket! :)

Here's the one on my '80 and it's adjustment. Excuse the pollen dust. It's been sitting for a while :(

I don't think they came stock, it could have been an add on option  don't know... I could be wrong here...Every throttle lock I have seen for these bikes have been aftermarket, I am just assuming they are....If they are stock then I really am a Monkeys Uncle...

There were no factory throttle locks on any year of Goldwing, so if you have one, it's aftermarket.

wow... We actually have a 1200 and my 1100 that have the same exact lock, that why I thought it was factory. Guess it was a popular lock then, back in the day, or I'm calling it by the wrong name. I'll get some pictures.

I was mistaken... it says Vista Cruz on it....

Anyway, I figured it out.... I guess I've never really looked at it. We actually have three goldwing's with one installed. I guess they were pretty widespread.

They belong to two of my other buddies. One's a 1200, the other is a 1500.

Yes, I've ridden both, in addition to mine... I like the soul of mine but I really like the way the 1500 handles... I didn't care for the 1200.

I've had the same throttle lock on all my bikes previous to my 'Wing. Seriously - the SAME throttle lock - I moved it from one bike to another, for a couple of decades. Mine went with my last bike to its new owner...*sigh*.

Anyway, adjustment is via using an allen key, or a narrow slot screwdriver, inside the little socket visible at dead-bang center in your photo. What I did with mine was to flick the lock to 'on', and slowly tighten the screw inside, feeling for friction. When it's JUST enough to overcome the spring return tension on the throttle, I tighten it just a TINY bit more (otherwise it will hold, but engine vibration will cause it to slip). Flip the lever to 'off', and ensure the throttle returns to idle with no resistance (usually, the throttle will slam closed with an audible 'clack' sound). Take it for a test ride, and carry the appropriate tool with you so you can make final adjustments, if necessary, at the roadside.

Those are great throttle locks, IMHO. Even when in the 'on' position, normal throttle action is still fully available, so they're very safe.

I also used mine as an adjunct to choke when cold starting. Just enough choke to fire it up, advance the throttle to keep the revs up, and kill the choke. Works great!
