Looking for GL1100 dipstick

Postby Aussie81Interstate » Thu Mar 19, 2015 5:16 am

Hi Guys,

I was wondering if anyone has a spare oil dipstick setup to sell. I was wanting one for my GL1100 interstate. I know they used to be available from some research - but have not been able to locate one on ebay or other sources.

I find it difficult to read my sight glass, and want an easier method to make sure the bike has the right amount of oil in it.

If anyone has one available, and willing to send/post to Australia - please send me a personal message to discuss a price etc.

Thank you

Charlie

The JC Whitney one seems to have disappeared from their site, but Wingovations has one: http://www.wingovations.com/wingovation ... 4584246734

The one from wingnovations is great quality as always. I bought one thinking it would be a great idea scrambling around on the floor on my GL1100a but I forgot about the front fairing and it would be hidden behind there, although if I undone 2 bolts it would be easy access to check. I have not fitted it yet and not sure that I will. Still pondering over that one.

ok, just in case anyone's interested, I also purchased an oil dip stick for the same reasons aussie81 and bobbybiscuit said. bending down to look thru that sight glass is a pain. heres how I did mine. the fairing will not be a problem as it doesn't even come anywhere near it depending on the type of dip stick you buy. what I did was I went to my local hardware store, bought a small round wire holder bracket with a rubber insert so the tube wouldn't move or get damaged, the same kind that you would use to hold the electrical wires that goes to the wires on your outside cable junction box or your telephone lines to the junction box. I slipped it over the dip stick tube, removed the lower right chrome radiator shield nut and mounted it onto that. it works perfectly and it stays out of the way of the fender too.

below is a pic of how I did it. hope this helps.

Now that is a useful tip. Thanks Roadwanderer2. Thats a job to do when its gets milder again scrambling over the cold ground. The pic was very helpful. :D

your welcome bobbybiscuit. glad I was able to help ya. now remember, depending on the type of dip stick you purchase, you might have to cut a notch thru the spot where the tube sticks out and crosses the lower fairing plastic. I got lucky with mine, it has only 1 bend in it from where it bolts up to the oil drain hole. some of the dip sticks have 2 bends, one coming away from the oil drain hole, and another one to the right or the left like the ones pictured on the wingovations site that wingadmin gave you the link to. keep that in mind for if and when you do decide to purchase one.

Stuart - I have the Wingnovations one. Bought it several months ago whilst the pound sterling against the dollar was a lot better. Spring is almost here, some warmer days now in the UK (about 10 to 13c daytime temperatures)

hey bobbybiscuit, after looking at the one pictured on the wingovation site and my lower fairing, it appears that you will have to "notch" out that one section of lower fairing that's on your bike in order to make it accessible without removing the lower fairing. I,(personally) would cut about 1" into the front edge and go about 5" down to start with after its strapped to the frame, that way you will still have most of the lower fairing intact and be able to get to your dip stick, or you could do this....install the dip stick tube, have it on a slight outward angle, and cut a round hole in the lower fairing plastic and slide the tube thru it for easer access. just a thought on that, but which ever way you go, im sure you'll get-er-done .
