Looking at a 82 1100

Postby Mikefoxtrot » Thu Mar 19, 2015 6:01 pm

Hey guys, I'm new to this forum and am looking for your expertise! I found a 1982 1100 Interstate on the good ol' craigslist. It has a blown head gasket. I'm looking to pick this up and fix it to ride around for a bit. I'm waiting to get some pics from the owner. What do you guys think?

If you can try to turn motor over to be sure it doesn't have bent valves. Head gaskets do both sides. Ask seller when timing belts were replaced. And if its been sitting the fuel and carbs may need cleaning. If you get pictures post some here. I think there was a 82 last NOV. up there for sale.

I'll ask about the belts and how long it has been sitting. When I go take a look, I'll try to turn it over too. I should have a better engine pic tomorrow in the daylight.

This is a dangerous place to ask "what do you think guys"?.... when I went and looked at mine, it had tree sap, mildue, leaves, mold, tore seat, flat tires, rusty chrome, pieces and bolts missing, no keys, paint dull and scratched, all kinds of banjo wiring showing.....and I thought it looked nice!
My exercise bike is a goldwing.

I don't know how many miles on the bike, but it looks clean to me. If you have to replace on head gasket, you may as well change them bot and the timing belts (you have to take them off anyway) will need replacing too... It would be a good time, if you are so inclined, to consider changing the water pump... since you won't know if it ias working properly until you change the head gasket and get the engine running again.

If I were doing the waterpump, I'd do thermostat, hoses and I'd pull the carb rack out and at least pull the bowls to have a look inside. whatever way you decide to go, I'm sure you'll get plenty of help here if you need it.
I am wrong as often as I am right concerning what is wrong with someone else' motorcycle without having seen the machine in person. Guessing with limited information, as to the source of the trouble, is sketchy at best.

If I'm in there replacing the head gaskets, I might as well do the timing belt and other bits that are accessible at that point. Here's what he sent me about it the other day: "The bike has just under 53K miles. Other than the head gasket it is in real good condition. The tires, windshield, and brakes were replaced not long before I took it off the road, the choke cable is new."
