speedometer replacement Please Help

Postby sportsfreaked » Sat Mar 21, 2015 9:29 am

Well this is turning into the money pit :x . I thought the speedometer didn't work because the cable was broke the speedometer doesn't work period. There are used ones on Ebay but I am weary of paying $100.00 for a used one with 50,000 miles on it and have the same thing happen. I took the speedo apart and it's shot. There is a brand new one on Ebay but it doesn't have the wiring. http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-GL1100-SP ... b7&vxp=mtr

Has anyone purchased an aftermarket speedometer? If so can you tell me where you purchased it from and how easy it was to fit to the bike. I have searched and searched and I really can't find any information on aftermarket speedometers and their use on gl1100's. I'm tired and sore and I have 2 weeks to get this bike done for inspection and registering. Thanks for the answers and or suggestions.

Thanks to all who answer and help. It is greatly appreciated!

question, are you sure its the speedometer itself that's broken or the speedo gear down on the wheel. can you raise the front wheel off the ground, disconnect the cable from the speedometer housing and spin the wheel to see if the cable is turning inside its sleeve?

Don't have any help....sorry. My speedo don't work ether-my odo does though. I'm in Va, and I passed inspection like that-nobody asked any questions about it, or drove it. I wonder if goldwings have a outstanding speedo problem? I used my gps and watched my tachometer and learned where 35, 45, 55, & 60 mph was in 4th & 5th gear. I'd like it working one day.
My exercise bike is a goldwing.

Stuart,
Yes I'm sure it's the speedometer. I disconnected the new cable I put on and zip tied it so I could see it then I drove the bike and the cable is spinning. I had an old cable and put it in the speedometer and the speedometer is shot. I took it apart and it's locked up tight and the little magnet thing is broke.

It seems these speedometers are junk and that's why I was looking to the aftermarket route. Thanks.

ok Ed, the stock OEM part number for your speedometer should be....37200-463-921 or 922. if you go onto eBay, type the first set of numbers into the searchbox and it will bring up listings for speedometers for your bike. if the first set of numbers don't work, type in 37200-921-922 and see if they come up with the right replacement. I don't see any reason you shouldn't be able to find an "aftermarket" speedometer to mount on your bike, as for the wiring, im not sure how that would work, but they should come with "instructions" to hook it up.
