3 possible problems.
Hydrolocked engine.
Bad solenoid.
Bad starter.
Centerstand.5th gear.Turn wheel to roll the engine over.if it's locked up pull all 4 plugs and bump the starter with the kill switch OFF.If its hydrolocked it will shoot gas 15 feet out the plug hole.
If the engine turns over by hand.Ground your test light(or meter)..probe the wire that attaches to the starter. It should have volts when the solenoid clicks. If it does, the starter is bad.If there is no volts, use a screwdriver and quickly short the 2 top posts of the solenoid. This will apply battery power direct to the starter. If it cranks, replace the solenoid.

I would agree that it is more likely the solenoid and or starter. I know on automobiles the starter and the solenoid are one unit for most of the newer cars like 85 on up. Not sure on the cycle if they are two separate units or one. Perhaps someone with more knowledge can answer that question. Please post back what you find out so others will know if they have a similar problem. Good luck.
Thanks to all who answer and help. It is greatly appreciated!

Good test.the bike runs.all that's left is the starter.it wouldn't crank the bike with the screwdriver.this means that not only is the starter needing work, the start solenoid is probably shot as well.
OR..you could always park it on a hill.
