Windsheild GL1980 1100I

Postby Kronos » Mon Mar 30, 2015 2:23 pm

First post, read frequently. Picked up this 1980 Interstate 2 years ago, nice help here would not have removed wheel without this site. Bought the voltage regulator just in case, mine still seems to be working. Had less than 30000 miles when got it 46000 starting this year, looking to replace windshield with one from Cee Baileys stock 20" OEM tall. Sound like a good idea??

It is a personal choice issue. I replaced my 82 Interstate with a tall window. Loved it. I am one who did not want to look over a window when it is pouring rain. Why have a window if you are going to look over it and get a face full of weather? Now I do different, but then I had a different take on things. However I would do it if you like it.

i have an extra tall wrap around on my 83 aspy. I've had it on the bike for almost 2 years now and I couldn't be happier with it. I do a lot of interstate highway riding, and its great. the wind goes over my head, I don't get any headwinds from the front. the only wind I get is from the sides which is ok with me. when my wife rides on the back with me, she is also glad I have it because she gets no head buffeting from the wind. below are photos of my bike with the tall windshield.

I will just be happy to have a stock one again that is nice and clear. Maybe there is something to put on it to make the bugs come off better. I try to keep bucket with light soap water in garage to sponge when done riding. Tried this plastic headlight restore stuff and really buffed it cleared it pretty good but not like new. This one looks like 35 years old time to replace it, I would hate to put some coating on it and have it hurt more than help.

there is a spray cleaner/polisher that Honda sells that you can get at your local Honda bike dealership. you simply spray some on, (not very much), using a terry cloth washcloth, wipe it all over the windshield until it fades, then use the dry side of the cloth to buff it out. do this to both sides of it and your windshield will be so clean you might forget your looking thru it.

here is a photo of what my windshield looks like from the rider's seat after I use the spray cleaner. believe it or not, there is a windshield there. if you decide to go with a new windshield, I wouldn't use anything else on it other than this Honda windshield cleaner/polisher. its made specifically for Plexiglas and acrylic windshields. you can also use it to polish your bike's plastics and chrome. makes everything nice and shiny.

your welcome. I hope it works as good for you as it does for me, but if it doesn't, it might be time to replace your windshield.

A tip for cleaning up those old windshields. I use Meguiars PlastX Clear Plastic Cleaner & Polish on mine and buff clean with a terry cloth towel. Trust me when i say if you want to restore your windshield on your bike, use this method. Stay away from Windex or 409 for cleaning the windshield

never ever use 409, Windex or any other window cleaner made for GLASS on your windshield, it will destroy it REAL quick,(ask me how I know this  )

From my point of view, I replaced my GL1100 wind shield with a Slip Stream model. I like being able to look over the top of the shield while I'm riding. I did opt to put some of that plastic chrome molding around the shield to divert the rain to the side instead of blasting me in the forehead.

I work with a MC enthusiast who has owned at least one of each model Goldwing ever produced. He not only owns them, he rides them a lot. He's currently riding an 1800 model, and he probably has as many miles in the seat as anyone I've ever met. I ride to and from work almost every day, but he manages to put more miles on his "touring" than I do in a year, and I respect his thoughts on Goldwings as much as anyone I know...

I say that to say this: I told him I was thinking about replacing my windscreen on the 1984 GL1200 because it is getting cloudy. This is what he told me (I haven't tried it yet)... he said, "try cleaning the windscreen with toothpaste" Apparently, like many of us, he uses furniture polish on his windscreen. He told me (one of his bikes) he found himself in a similar situation a few years back and his brother told him to try toothpaste. After some deliberation, he got out some toothpaste and a cloth and started rubbing... and flakes of built up waxy coating (cloudy stuff) started coming off the windshield, and when he finished, the surface was clear and scratch-free, almost as good as new.

When I get tired of looking through that milky-white plastic, I'm going to get out a buffer and some "Crest" toothpaste and give it a try... worst case is I'll have wasted some time and toothpaste on a windshield I need to replace... Just a thought.

I am wrong as often as I am right concerning what is wrong with someone else' motorcycle without having seen the machine in person. Guessing with limited information, as to the source of the trouble, is sketchy at best.
