Radio question again :)

Postby sportsfreaked » Thu Apr 02, 2015 4:11 pm

Ok my radio works as I was able to hook it up to a headset and it works. The problems seems to be the amp. Is the radio suppose to be able to be turned on with the bike off and the key out? If it is not then where should I check as far as wiring? It seems that the unit also fries the amp. Since I don't have a headset and it would be a while before I get one I would love to have music. I need my music. I need it bad. Like a drug :). As always thanks! Ed

what kind of bike? GL1100?
What kind of radio? Clarion I, clarion II, or another kind?
What kind of Fairing? Vetter or Honda?

Pics answers a lot of questions so we can help you.

Right of the top you have two power feeds to the unit. You will have to determine which is which. One is just for the memory, it keeps you programmed stations in memory. It should be wired, always hot (fused of course). The other power is the main radio power. It will be wired to the main switch, so that it only turns on when the bike is on or in ACC. I also believe there is a relay involved to temporarily dispower the radio when you hit the starter. Can't remember and it has been many moons since I had my 82 Interstate. If you can get a hold of a schematic it will help you immensely. A Service Manaul too!

I do not believe there is a relay.
The radio should not be on if keys are off unless PO wired it differently. The little black wire is the memory wire.

Take both fairing pockets out and you can see most of the system. The radio will be on the right side. The preamp and connections will be in the left pocket. Make sure the connections are clean and good. All plugs are color coded so not much chance of getting something confused.

Take a look inside so you know what is in there. Call sierra electronics with your problem. They are good at these antiques and the only ones in the world who still work on these. They are good at giving info over the phone.
