Dash bulbs replaced with LEDs - success!

Postby tvtruth » Sun Apr 05, 2015 10:23 pm

Hi guys, just wanted to chime in that I replaced my tachometer, speedometer and Fuel/temp gauge lights with LED bulbs and the result was stunning. Waaaay less power used. I put in these: https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinf ... b-4-led/6/
Did you know that you have 34 watts of bulbs just in your gauges and your turn signal/high beam/neutral dash area? If you have the time to pull this unit apart (not that hard) you will really be pleased with the results.

So how many bulbs did you replace? Did you go with white?

Is it best not to touch the bulb with your fingers,, I understand the oil on your fingers can shorten the life of the bulb, or is that just for the headlight bulb?

Right 12v ones work just great. Here is a pic of the results:
replaced both bulbs in the gauges and the in the fuel/temp display
replaced both bulbs in the gauges and the in the fuel/temp display

I'm not sure why the fuel/temp didn't show up so well in the pic. Better in real life.

I so want to do that to my 1100.

To get to the bulbs, can I do it with the hood and faring in place? AND has anyone used other colors? I'd like red (like the old Pontiacs)

You will definitely nee to remove the hood. Some have one it without removing the fairing. I have seen a video on here somewhere about it. MUCH easier if you take the time to remove the fairing. It's just so little space to get to so many screws and nuts. It's not hard - but the limited space make it much harder.

A warning is in order here. I just replaced the ones in my 83.....they are a 194 type wedge-base, not a push-and-turn. I'm not sure when they made the change...make sure you're not ordering the wrong type!

There is only one bulb in the temp/fuel housing

I would not order the turn signal bulbs in LED. They do not flash very well. The LEDs simply flash from dim to bright. It definitely lets you know which signal is lighting but not as dramatic an on/off as the incandescent

BTW - I added two of these on my rear fender to give me more visibility:
https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinf ... module/18/

I wired them into the brake light so they only come on when I hit the brakes. They make a SERIOUS statement. I ordered them in red. Super nice upgrade to my lighting. I feel safer just knowing they are back there.

I did not heed the warning. I did not realize you had 81 and mine is 83.

So any one want the bulbs I ordered?
