towing

Postby 1fastgl1100 » Mon Apr 06, 2015 5:55 am

I own an 83 GL1100a with 84,000 miles, the bike runs great and I own a small (4x4) trailer to haul trash and such around.
I want to build a basic camper (4x8). No frills just a mattress and maybe a light and an ac unit. And I am interested in what the towing capabilities are for my bike?
I have updated the trailer hitch so it is solidly connected to frame of bike. And feel hitch can handle up to 50# tongue weight.
What can the bike pull 350# to 500# ?

The bike can pull 500lbs with no difficulty, heck it can pull much more than that. The problem is not what it can pull, its what the bike can stop and how fast it can stop it safely. The more weight you pull behind you the more weight is trying to push you when you need to stop. I have pulled a 350lb pod trailer with my 1100 with no problems at all, barely knew it was back there. With the 1500 I pull closer to 700lbs.
You could always add electric brakes to the trailer if you are worried. There is lots of good info on trailers and camping on a motorcycle here at http://www.motocampers.com/ (I have been known to hang out there as well). 8-)
Ride safe, Todd
Over night campers welcome

Thanks. The small trailer I have I normally carry stuff locally. However I do carry alot of stuff for camping (including a large cooler loaded with drinks and ice).
Anything much over 400# I might consider getting electric brakes.
