Broken water pump housing mount

Postby Chitreano » Wed Apr 15, 2015 3:46 pm

I am rebuilding an 82 GL 1100. To not bore you, the top left (sitting) mounting post for the water pump housing broke off. (Long story of penetrant, heat, penetrant, heat, busted bolt, broken easy outs and finally the broken mount). Lesson learned. It is the external bolt mount that snapped off. Can it be tig welded & work well enough to seal. Nothing is harmed but the outer half of the mounting hump/tit/nubbin or whatever their official name is.

A picture would be helpful.
Is it the transmission cover, #1? The water pump mounts in the transmission cover.

or the water pump cover, #7
Or #8, water pump cap

Thank you. It is the transmission cover. The broken mount ear is located just above # 1 in the first diagram.

If I was going to tig that back together it would cost you 50.00, I like most charge a minimum, for 35 bucks you can get one shipping included.http://www.ebay.com/itm/81-Honda-goldwi ... 51&vxp=mtr

Apologies, it is the ear on the block that is broken, not the cover.

bummer, well if you lived out here on the left coast I would be happy to weld it up for you. For a decent shop it should be no big deal, weld up area to thread grind/file it down (this is if tab is not useable), put cover on to mark hole, remove cover, drill/ tap install heli coil (welded aluminum goes dead soft so you would have a much stronger threaded tab with a heli coil in it).
If tab is good, weld it on and your good to go, although I would still heli coil tab,it will be soft after welding.

This is a regular occurrence on these engines. The bolt hole on the block goes right through to open air, allowing moisture into the threads.

For anyone else; If your bolt will unscrew, coat it with anti-seize before refitting it and block the end of the hole with filler. I use some of the two part epoxy 'sausages' type that you can take a slice off, knead between your fingers to activate it and stuff in in the hole!

'Impossible' is just a level of difficulty! The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask first!
