New Tachometer cable

Postby ankgrays » Sat Apr 18, 2015 5:29 pm

It broke late last fall.

Just finished replacing it with a new one myself.

I feel great about doing it myself, but.....

I need smaller hands AND a lot more patience.

I had to take several breaks to re-group.

That is all.

Nothing like the satisfaction of doing it yourself! Good to hear all went well!
Thanks to all who answer and help. It is greatly appreciated!

It does feel good to tackle these issues ourselves instead of spending hard earned money for someone else to do it for us. With this under your belt it will be no time before you are doing the timming belts...8-)

Funny you should mention that....

New tires and new timing belts are next. (And maybe a starter)

I'd rather ride it than work on it though.

I just did the timing belts and it was a breeze with littlebeavers method. While you do the timing belts change the coolant and hoses.

My Tach is not working and it is not actually connect to the tach. The bike runs well (GL1100A 83') but the tach cable does not even turn. How do I know if it needs to be replaced and to where. This is my first bike ever, so I am a noob but take instruction well.

If its hooked up on both ends and it doesn't work...

its either broken and needs replaced OR....

you have bad gears in the tach itself. If thats the case, then there are ALOT smarter people on this

site, that have ALOT more knowledge of the subject.

Sorry

Thanks for the reply.
If it is attached to the bike going into a casing by the rear brake, shouldn't the cable spin if it is not in the tach?

If the cable is not connected at both ends then the cable should spin. If you have attached to the gears on one end you will not be able to turn the cable by hand. If it is hooked up to the gears start the bike and see if the cable is spinning. If the cable is not spinning then most likely the cable is bad. Your best bet would be to buy a new cable they are only like 15-20 bucks I think and then you will know you have a good cable.
