Steering problems

Postby speedy04 » Thu Apr 23, 2015 10:37 pm

Hi all. I need some help from all of you knowledgeable people. I took my bike down to class today and while I was in class some a$$hat did a hit and run on the bike. When I got back to it, it was on it's right side in the gutter. While the bike only sustained minor cosmetic damage to the right bag lid from the curb, something is not right. The bike wants to go to the right now. My usual 20 minute ride home took me 45 minutes today due to the pull/wobble. I would normally have taken the freeway, but I was not going to chance it with the way she felt. My question to everyone is where to start checking her out? I have a bad feeling that the problem will be either in the forks or the triple tree as I can not lock the fork now. I should mention that the fork was locked to the left side when I left her which you will see when I can post the pics .

My limited experience with hit/run on bikes has been the forks seem to be the first casualty. The would be the weakest link on a bike with locked forks (in my opinion). Another stupid question, but did either rim get bent?

CMReynolds1 as far as I can tell the are fine. The rear is still rock solid and I didn't get any feedback from the handle bars that would indicate that the front rim was bent.

sppedy,

If you are lucky the forks are out of alignment and maybe the top clamp has twisted.

To fix the problem is pretty easy.

Just jack the front end off the ground and release the top clamp bolts and loosen the lower triple clamp bolts. Then lower the bike back down gently then pump the front forks holding the front brake lever several times - then tighten up the loosened bolts. You could even find if you straddle the front wheel looking towards the back of the bike - the front wheeel is not aligned with the handlebars - you might be able to move them back - this hopefuly is they easy solution and fix to your problem.

cheers

As promised here are the pics. Sorry it took me so long, but this is my week to work. The handle bars were off by about a 1/4". Should I release the pressure on the forks when I loosen up everything.

Okay, here's the update. I finally had some time to look at the forks to straighten them. Took me about a half hour before I was happy with how things looked. Got her all tightened up and took it for a ride round the block and it seems to have done the trick. I need to put some freeway miles on to be sure, but thanks for the help. It means a lot for me to get her back on the road. :) :) :)
