Factory stereo issues

Postby geezer2 » Sun May 03, 2015 3:42 pm

Ok folks, I searched but came up with nothing. Maybe someone has run into this and found a fix... my am/fm Clarion stereo will work, but won't maintain the settings after I turn the bike off. The clock is giving me fits as well. It won't set. Electrical connections, dirty battery connections, etc. I'm hoping someone can save me some trouble shooting time. Thanks in advance. Geezer

We talking about the stereo in your HD? Not really familiar with them, but could it have a keep alive battery in it? A small replaceable one? If not, then for some reason, your stereo is losing power when you shut the bike off, and it is not retaining the memory settings. It could be a fuse on the keep alive line, if there is no internal battery.
It ain't about the destination - it's all about the journey

No radio in the HD. This is the factory am/fm Clarion in the 82 GL1100A I just picked up.

Open up the right turn signal on the fairing. You will see a rats nest of wires. There are 5 fuses in there. Check the fuses and check that the wires are good on the fuse holders. Probably your fuse is no good causing the clock and preset stations to disappear.

Sometimes it is easier to get your hands in through the left pocket. take out the pocket and you will see if it is easier AFTER you take the turn signal lens off.

The oem fuse for the memory is 1 amp and I always replace with a 2 amp. I believe it is in a white clamshell holder with black wire.

Well.... opened up the signal and, HOLY CRAP!!! What a hornets nest that is. Not sure if I found it or not. Manuals were no help. Found 3 clamshell housings with black wires going in, but with colored stripes coming out. This is going to have to wait till I've got more time. I'm riding it in the mornings to work. Any more specific info would be great if anyone has it. Thanks for the input so far. Geezer

The clamshell fuse holders had spare fuses in them, if so then look for the one that has a 1 amp fuse, that is the memory fuse, also has 12V with ignition off.

Correct, the memory fuse is the only one with +12v with the ignition turned off - just be careful when opening/testing/replacing fuse, because if it accidentally drops against something metal/grounded, you will be met with a big spark and potentially wires melting. :)

Finally found it. All is good now. Thought the damn clock doesn't want to set. Oh well, at least I got tunes. Fuse was toast as was my 15amp accessories fuse. Raised the windshield as well. I'm liking this bike a whole bunch. If this keeps up, I may have to sell both of em and buy a newer wing! lol
