Cylinder head issue

Postby littlebeaver » Mon May 04, 2015 3:53 pm

It's not a issue anymore thought... I fixed it,, see I was putting on the valve cover for the 100th time and I discovered that two of the bolts didn't seem to tighten,, didn't I twist it one too many turns??? I guess I did,,, well I have never done that before as I always completely careful about how soft aluminum is but you guess it. Stripped bolt holes on two of them, now this is on the head so I went down to the local Napa store and got myself a helicoil set up for the 6mm bolt holes, I used the 1/4" drill bit then tapped it and the little inserting tool works like a champ,, I had the Helicoil inserted in just a snap, all is good and the star will shine bright....Ed (Sportsfreak) mentioned a heli coil in one of his post as he used it to repair a problem he had,, that guy is one of the fastest mechanics I ever did see... anyways I found that the heli coil was completely necessary in this case, I did a good repair using it... it went together with ease..

I've been thinking about using a helicoil to repair a stripped case bolt on my 750F. after reading this I think I will

I know I don't need to say this but I will anyway, always step up the sizes of the drill bits until you get the size you need,,, in my case I only used one other smaller bit then the 1/4" a little 3 in 1 oil and tapping was a breeze, the kit is costly though $40.00 or so but you can assure a good repair with it, but it the best way to fix it..... That was in my left cylinder head so I had to fix it right.. Thanks Ed for the Heli coil idea,,,...

I've used them as well, but I prefer not to - I've had Helicoils back out on me before. My preference now is Timeserts, they have a locking tab that prevents them from backing out - ever.

Wow, That looks like it could work...... Thanks man... I hope they never back out and if they do, I will try it again but maybe use some locktite on it next time... I guess I'd have to clear out the hole with brake cleaner first and a q tip to get all the oils out and let it dry well first... I suppose if there were ever a need for locktite , this would be it..
