how much can i modify rxhaust eithout rejetting carbs?

Postby halcombrick » Mon May 11, 2015 6:12 pm

Hey guys I would like a deeper sound to my 1100, my question is at what point will I have to rejet? Right now I'm just thinking long tips that come out the back but if its not a lot of trouble I may modify my old muffler to get a better sound.

I am not much help here, but all I can say is to turn your hearing aid down, and raise the Bass on your sound system. I dislike noisy exhausts, so quieter is betterer for me.

I'm not wanting it loud like a Harley just a little bit deeper rumble.

its a 4 cyl engine you can not make it sound good by making it louder, period. I like being able to hear everything around me, I can hear the tires on the road, I can hear the other vehicles as they start getting too close to me, heck I can even hear a mouse fart in the ditch as I ride past at 100kph. Yes its good. 8-)

i agree with above but to answer your question..back pressure in the pipes isn't a big deal on the GL's..soem are running straight pipes with no rejetting.

You will never make it sound like a Harley however Harley Sportster mufflers work very well and make for a nice soft rumble at low to moderate acceleration and at cruise rpm the sound is acceptable for long rides. Hard acceleration is a whole nother ballgame. They really scream. I like the sound these 4 bangers create with the Sportster mufflers. No re-jetting or crossover required. I think there is a "How to" posted on installing them. They are cheap also. Almost free even on ebay.

I like the sportster idea I don't want it to sound like a Harley..I cant stand the head busting sound they got but I would like a good rumble and under hard acceleration I would like it to scream.

I have '98 Sportster mufflers on my 1100 but I've never heard them. My headers are so rotted and leaky , that's all I hear

I thought that one of the reasons why you purchase a GW, is that you can hear your co-rider change their mind while cruising at 100 Km/h. Unlike the V-twins who have to have a hearing aid at the age of 42 because of the noise effect. No wonder people get hearing plugs when they ride those noisy machines.

Ok so I cant talk you out of making it louder, thats your choice. You could try to drill out the pop rivit that holds the baffle in the muffler. Expect it to give you so grief when you try to pull it out, a slide hammer would help. Once its out you can either run without any baffling or you can remove some of the material and reinstall the modified baffle until you get where you want to be.
The only way you are going to get a deep rumble out of a 1100cc 4cly engine is to replace it with a much bigger engine with fewer cylinders or twice as many cylinders. Have fun with the project, its your bike to do with as you please, dont be surprized if after you make it louder you find yourself riding alone alot. 8-)

After considering everything I think I will just leave it like it is and just put some chrome tips on it coming all the way out past mu bumper...that's all I really want anyway is chrome tips coming a couple of inches past the bumper.

hello halcombrick. over this past fall and winter I brought a 82 gl1100 back from the grave and with stock pipes with turndown tips this bike has a good tone. not real loud but you can hear it coming. perhaps the po did something to it before my friend picked it up and lucky me had to do the restoration. No matter what you do it will not be real loud, if you use straight pipes it has a rapping sound, not pleasant (it tried it on my 99 1500) sounded terrible. You will not know what things sound like until you try something different. enjoy your ride and be safe. Regardless of our friend down under, loud pipes do safe lives (and set of car alarms in the wee hours of the morning)

I put 2 inch pipes over the baffles and ran them out even with the rear bumper...it gave me just the sound I was wanting..its quieter on the bike but behind it there is a lot deeper rumble and its noticeably louder I am going to put chrome tips on it that come out about 3 inches past the bumper for the finishing touch

Good job. My preference on the tips are the turn down. They bounce the sound off the ground and it gives the pipes a good sound when you are idling . Nothing but personal observation in this choice. Once underway a more mellow tone becomes evident. Experiment until you achieve what you want within your budget.
