Rear suspension rebuild question.

Postby WingNutJC » Sat May 16, 2015 5:27 am

Sorry to be starting a new thread on this but I could'nt find the info here or on other 'Wing sites:

'82 GL1100: have just dismantled one shock and ready to fit 'Progressive' springs, but:

- around the top of the plunger shaft there is what I'd describe as a lump of sticky black tar, but at a guess I'd say it's the remains of a deceased bump stop rubber. :(

I've never seen them mentioned, so does anyone know where can I obtain them pls?

- what is the gunk in this (middle pic), and is there supposed to be a full rubber insert there instead?

Cheers and thanks.

WingNut.

It is a bumper, I replaced mine last year. I can't remember where I bought it at right now. I'll try to find the source and post it.

This what I bought for my bike. I found it on Stave Saunders page, Goldwingfacts.com

If your speaking of a travel limiter they can be found on e-bay for about $20. If memory serves me right it should be a 1/4 inch. I installed them on my progressives 412"s. A must if you have a passenger. Regards, Johnny

Yes it is the remains of the stopper.

Here is my way of doing it. Parts list near the end.

Thanks for all your replies.

What I'm also after is info about this: is it mean't to have anything in in it, like a rubber ring ?

Cheers.

No there is no ring. That is what is left of your bumper .
That is your seal for the atf and air.
