Thinking about trading the wing

Postby sleepy3103 » Tue May 19, 2015 3:54 am

Hey guys, just wanted to get some feedback. I'm thinking about trading my 83 Interstate for something lighter and faster, like a V65 Magna/Sabre or something like that. Don't do a lot of long trips and the wife is getting her own bike so I'm thinking about getting something a little more fun. What other bikes would be a good trade? thanks for any input guys.

You'll be sorrrrry! If that bike looks as good in person as it does in the pic there is no way I would be getting rid of it.

The V65 is a suicide machine!
We be talking WAYYYYY fast :o !
The only thing I didn't like on the beast is the sitting position, the rear shocks are in line with your back and can make for a very uncomfortable ride, plus the foot pegs are set in a quirky position that is also uncomfortable - as in ride for a half hour then get off and work out the cramps!
But if you want to get to point B from point A in less time then it takes to read this sentence, then its the ride for you. Regards, Johnny

Smaller and lighter? How about a GL650I or GL500I?
Here's one from a member on a forum I belong to: http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/mcy/5026118158.html
It still looks like a Wing.

trike lady is right, a GL500i or the GL650i full dress silverwing would be a good choice. i had an 81 GL500i silverwing interstate and for the 3 years i owned it, it took me where ever i wanted to go including a trip down to the Florida keys and back in comfort, fuel economy, and power to move out of its own way and keep up with the "big boys" even though top speed was just over 90mph. if your g/w were mine, i would hang keep it and use that for long distance 2-up riding road trips and get a smaller one for every day use.

I want something lighter and faster, so a silverwing wont do. I love power thats why I said a V65. If I could afford it I would keep the wing and Buy a VMAX, or just buy a FJR1300 and have the best of both worlds but I can't so I'm either gonna keep the wing or trade for something fast. Don't know yet I'm just getting some feedback to see what Ideas everyone has. I really like the wing, its just not fast enough for me. It handle way better than I would have expected before I bought one though. I might just sell it and buy something else if I can't trade it. I don't know its a hard choice.

What about an F6B? They move out. 100 lbs lighter, 1.5 inches lower & still have a lot of Wing stuff. Actually a Goldwing on steriods!

If I could afford a new bike it would be the FJR1300, Best of both worlds. Touring and Speed.

the problem is " I like speed too much " which is why I got a wing in the first place, to slow down. I grew up with fast bikes long before crotch rockets were made. 85mph was good for the slow lane on the expressway. only place I didn't speed was through school zones and side streets. so no I don't really need something faster. but I've been thinking about an st-1300 lately and will probably get one next year and let my 1200 wing go. if I find myself constantly speeding like back in the good old days the st-1300 will be sold, riding isn't all about speed

here's a suggestion for ya, if you took all the "extra's" off like the fairing, trunk, saddlebags and guards, you would be removing about 150 pounds in weight making your wing a lot lighter AND faster and still be able to keep it. turn it into a "naked" wing. the cost of making it naked would definitely be cheaper than going out and buying another bike. the fairing weighs about 90lbs, the trunk another 20-25, the saddlebags have to weigh at least 30, the saddlebag guards around 20, and the steering weight is about 4, so you would be taking off a lot of weight. the only things you would have to do is get new front and rear signals, tail/stop light and a headlight bucket with fork ears to bolt the headlight back onto the bike. consider this option before you go out and spend who knows how much for another bike.

Well Sleepy, the enjoyment of riding is the bottom line. I hope you are able to find what you want. No matter what you are riding, the bottom line is you ARE RIDING!
Good luck and ride safe!

Hi Sleepy3103, I speak from experience here. I have the Wing, but I also have an 83 V45 Magna. I also ride both regularly. The Magna is definitely the more nimble of the two. If I'm going someplace with limited space for parking or I'd be worried about leaving the Wing unattended the Magna is the only choice. I've been on both for rides of 3+ hours so far and I really can't say either one was uncomfortable. Keep the wing and find a Magna that you can make a project out of. You can find them pretty cheep and parts are easy to find. I know people love the V65, but imho its an over engined raped ape. I can have the V45 up to 60mph on the expressway on ramp and I still have 2 gears to go.

Yesindeed...!....I'm with roadwonderer. Customize the best bike ever built (let the mileage be my witness)! A standard goldwing handles way different, and 81 hp at low rpm ( high torque engine) is more useful on the street. Check this out....horse powe = rpm x torque ÷ 5252. So, having a bike with 100 hp, but needing to turn 13000 rpm to achieve that, is, a COP magnet. Just my opinion ...hmmm...where did my smilly go?

My exercise bike is a goldwing.
