Fix it,

Rebuild the left brake caliper - probably a stuck piston not retracting, letting the pads heat up and boil the brake fluid causing it to lock, or a bad master cylinder with relief valve clogged, but this should also happen on the right brake as well. You could release the bleeder valve - but if it continues I would check the master cylinder for correct operation.

I experienced a very similar problem on my 79. I had some problems with my 84 as well. Considering the age of the system and the fact that there's probably a lot of small particles and dirt in there I think it's time to go through the system. A good flush and cylinder rebuild would help keep things trouble free for another thirty years.
On my 79 it was a piece of very tiny debris lodged into the bleedback hole on the handlebar cylinder. The damage (heat) which the front disk had been exposed to caused it to squeal even after it was repaired and working properly again. Caliper and master rebuild and a good flush/purge with fresh fluid would sure give peace of mind out on the road.

Drain master reservoir, clean spooge hole, refill and bleed.
Why do more work than it needs?
When all else fails, RTFM!

Yes, this is almost always caused by the return port in the master cylinder being blocked.
