83 aspencade fan motor wiring

Postby Flyboy6 » Wed May 27, 2015 7:59 am

I have recently wired up a switch to bypass the thermo-switch, just bringing fan on when traffic starts to heat things up. (now have replacement thermoswitch, will re-install next time I'm up to my wrists in that part of the motor)

Couldn't bring fan on yesterday - have traced the following :

- hot wired fan, it works fine.
- no fuse, power to fan (according to schematic) goes from starter relay to (via red wire) 'main relay', out to fan motor (therefore no fuse other than main fuse, which is fine)
- since 'main relay' also serves ignition, and ignition is fine, I'm guessing that relay is fine.
- if I jumper across the thermo-switch, no fan,so, since jumping that switch completes the ground, my problem is somewhere in the wiring loom?

Any advice helpful.

Quick fix will be to take current either from accessory bus or straight from starter relay to fan motor via a fused switch. But that won't answer my question about where the snag might be.

You need to find at what point the power disappears - is there power at the fan when the ignition is on? If not, where in between the ignition and the fan does the power stop flowing? There's likely a connector somewhere that's gone bad, or a wire that got pinched.

Indeed. As best I can trace the path, the power goes from battery to starter relay to main relay to fan motor. So since everything else is operating fine, that second relay (called 'main relay' in schematic) would seem to be the spot. Need to look in FSM for troubleshooting that relay, but I would guess that since it serves the ignition, bike would not run if that was cooked.

The wiring path from that relay to the fan motor is buried in the belly of the bike, and in the loom.

Downside to ignoring that wiring, going straight from accessory bus to fused switch to fan, grounding fan to frame?

I may be missing some simpler way to track a fault - like continuity test from relay to fan motor wiring...
