Starter Constantly Running without the Key (Christine?)

Postby jimbutler » Thu May 28, 2015 7:48 pm

Hi folks,
After a hard rain I found the 82 GL1100 interstate turning over on its own. It sits under a cover in the driveway.
There was no key in the ignition and kill switch was off. I had to pull the negative battery cable off to get it to stop.
After it dried out, it is still turns over when the battery is connected.

Has anyone seen this before? I'll probably dive into it over the weekend.

Jim Butler, Herndon VA.

This will not fix it for very long...but...with the button end of a healthy screwdriver, give the starter solenoid a good smack or two.Its to the right of the battery.
The insides are stuck or the contacts welded stuck...Either way you'll probably need to replace the solenoid....Don't forget to tend to the 30 amp dogbone fuse and 3 yellow wires while your spending quality time with the bike.
Only in a pinch did I find it worth my time to drill the rivits and disassemble one for cleaning.

Thanks will give it a bang. Should I replace the fuse for good measure? Figure I'd order them both.

No real need to replace the fuse as they really don't age per say. If you ordered one you can replace it if you want and keep the other for a spare or just keep the new one for a spare.
Thanks to all who answer and help. It is greatly appreciated!

If whack on the solenoid does get to operate correctly,I certainly would replace it....ASAP..If you get a exact replacement,it should have a new fuse link in it.If the solenoid isn't an exact replacement, you may need to "modify" the wiring and attach a fuse holder to it.
Either one is acceptable.A generic start solenoid may have just 2 large lugs for the big cables and 2 small terminals for the coil.
The original has 4 smaller terminals...the ones furthest away from the lugs are bonded together and connect to the big red power wires...these terminals connect to the 30 amp fuse (usually behind a snap open cover) and back to the "B" lug...Be careful..."B" goes to the battery and "S" is the starter cable...Don't get them backward...The bike won't charge the battery.

The old owner of the bike may have died....He is unhappy and he's telling you he wants you to ride his bike.... I'd do the same if someone put a cover on my bike and if I was in the spirit world  ...LOL just kidding..... Is kinda freakin weird though....I got the willy's....
