neutral light comes on in fourth gear

Postby dlk95 » Mon Jun 01, 2015 9:00 pm

I have a 82 gl1100i, the neutral light comes on only in fourth gear, I just got the bike so I don't know what may have been worked on before. My question is, is there an adjustment to the switch to aline it with the proper position ?

No there is no adjustment.

I do not know what to look for in your bike.

I had the problem that the neutral light came on if I pulled the clutch in -in any gear. It ended in a new diode on the left side behind the air box.

Maybe your diode is failing. I have no idea if this is the case or not.

sorry dlk still do not know how to solve your problem.

You have to take the air box completely out. The diode is along the left side sitting on the bike and is attached in the wiring harness. It took me a while to find it also. but it is there.

Here is a link with pics showing the diode in place.

hey wilcoy, thanks for the link, im going to check it out now. ohhhhhh, ok, NOW i see it. its right near that ceramic ballast resistor. thank you. i see where i have to remove the entire air box to get to it. let me go out to my bike and see if i can get to it.

im sorry if it seems like im highjacking this thread, (not my intention), but it still has to do with the neutral light coming on when the clutch lever is pulled in, so i put my findings in a new posting which can be found here........... viewtopic.php?f=4&t=27964

Yes - when the water pump is replaced, the front engine cover is removed. There is a switch inside the cover that needs to be lined up with the shifter mechanism, in order for the neutral light to come on at the proper time. If it is not lined up properly, this can happen.

If you read through How to remove and replace your water pump you can see what is involved in getting to this switch, and decide whether or not you want to fix it.
