Final Drive Question

Postby gamartin » Tue Jun 02, 2015 3:01 pm

I've got a 1980 GL1100 that is leaking and starting to sling fluid on the rear wheel assembly.
From what I understand alot of the seals for this assembly are no longer available, so the easiest repair is to replace the entire assembly with a used one?
Does it matter from what year? ANy GL1100 will work, correct?

FYI: I already tried the Randack thing with using Lucas Hub Oil. It seems to have gotten worse.

So would a newer final drive have a higher ratio? Lower highway RPMs?

The 1980 and 1981 had a 3.091 final drive ratio, the 1982 and 1983 had 3.100 - barely enough of a change to make any difference. Most of the gearing changes in the different years were done in the transmission.

Update: Finally got some time off and changed out the final drive. The PO had sometime had taken the original apart, it had silicone sealer on it instead of a gasket and every o-ring I came across was pinched or damaged. The new drive is much quieter going down the road. FYI, changing from a 1980 to 1982 final drive requires switching out the sheet metal dust shield. If not switched, the newer design will cut into the comstar wheel hub, don't ask me how I know :)

Any way, I appreciate so much the collective knowledge in this forum. Thanks to all.

Update: Rode to work this morning and when I got off the bike I could smell oil, looked down at the rear wheel and a final drive seal had let loose.

Since these drives are old and Honda has ceased carrying most of the seals, has anyone been able to find a source for the seals?
Instead of throwing money down the drain after another "low mileage" used unit that may last a week or a couple years, it makes more sense to me to rebuild one of my existing units. Especially since both have good sets of gears.

Pretty bummed, since I would rather be riding than worknig on the bike in good weather.
