Does not run below 2,500 rpm

Postby z1choppers » Tue Jul 28, 2009 3:49 pm

I am new to your site. I purchased an 82 GL1100, runs great above 2500 rpm. Will not idle hardly at all. Just overhauled the carbs. Runs the same. I have set pilot jets at three turns. Plugs are good. Is it possible it is an ignition problem? Compression is 140 on all cylinders. I have ordered a book but it will be several days before it comes. I need an idea which direction to look. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

Greetings, I am new to this site and it is great for tech assistance. I have picked up an '82 Asp which has 17k on it and only 1k in the last 14 years. My bike is doing the same thing.... I have the carbs off once now and am tinkering with it waiting for my sinc guages to arrive. I'm still having the idle issue though with my idle screw all the way in!!!!! Something is wrong... I'm going to pull and clean them again this weekend... Bummer Hope someone can give us both some good advice here.

If the voltage is low, the spark will be weak and you'll find you'll get the problems you're describing. If you hook a voltmeter up to the battery when you're trying to idle it, what sort of voltage are you seeing?

Thank for the tip. Mine has 12.5 and 12.8 running. I'm following the same advice as mentioned hoping not to have to pull the carbs again. Thanks

It has 12.8 volts while running at idle? Or does it show that when it's running at speed (i.e. 3,000 rpm)? If it's showing only 12.8 volts at speed, then you've got a problem.

Hi:
Re: the 82 Honda 1100 Goldwing that will not idle under 2500 rpm's . I pulled the timing belt covers off. Timining is in allignment with timing arrows. Synced carbs at 2500 rpm, they are all the same. Took rear wheel off to the timing weights - checked vacumm & mechanical timing advance. They are good. The only thing I have not checked and do not know how to check is the spark unit. It has a thin blue spark at the plugs and will jump 1/4" wide gap at the plug. I will recheck carbs. I used K&L kits have heard they have bad idle mix screws. Any ideas? Thanks[/b][/b]

z1choppers,

I am having the exact same problem as you. Just rebuilt the carbs and idle screw all the way in, but she still runs like crap. Wont idle for nothing. I have no vac leaks; checked exhaustively for that. Got fuel, got spark and it'll run if I keep the rpm's up. I synchronized the best I could at 2k rpm, but the bitch wont idle so there is no vac reading on my gages.

I have the carbtune device which uses rods (float up and down) instead of mercury or vac "reading" gage.

Very frustrating.

Hi fellow wingers, after checking everything several times. I went back to the carbs 2 of the 4 had the secondary jets pluged, they are pressed in could not get them out could not boil them out. so got another set from junk yard, they cleaned up good all pasages clear put my kits in they run perfect, idles at 950. boiled them in hot water and used water pick to check all passages. good luck. this is a very good web sight ,will use it again. thanks. Hello All,
Wel I finally pulled my carbs off for the second time. I found that one of the manifold o rigs had gotten destroyed and was sucking air. That was why my idle srew was all the way in and I couldn't get a low idle. I hope to sync them up today. Thanks for the advice.

The only thing I have not done is boiled them, do I strip them down to the bare bones, all seals, jets, diaphrams etc. and how long do I boil them. Do I boil the jets etc and do I put anything in the water. The easy thing would be if anybody know the precedejour could you please let me know. HELP :?
