83 goldwing running dunlop 491 elite 2 what should the tire pressure be

Postby mtdavis72960 » Mon Jun 08, 2015 5:47 pm

83 goldwing running dunlop 491 elite 2 what should the tire pressure be, just checked a lot of sites and it can be between 32 and 40, I am checking for things to make the tire rub, which I haven't found anything loose but the pressure was 25psi. Should I take it to 40 or 1/2 way to 34 -36

I would say to use 38 front and 41 rear. That is pretty much the standard for Elite II.

Where is it rubbing? Even if it is running on lower pressure than 'normal', it should not be rubbing. It will have more drag, as more of the tyre is sitting on the ground, but it should be flexible enough to return to a normal shape once it has passed the ground.

How old is the tyre? It may be fairly old, and is losing some of its resilience.

the rub area is at the edge of the tire not towards the center, I checked the swing arm and no issue, put chalk on the tire and spun it and shows no rub, I am uncertain on the age of the tire, its a 83 one owner bike that I just purchase about 3 months ago, rode it without an issue, this weekend was the first time I smelled the rubber burn,

Are the tire sizes correct for the '83 1100? You didn't say if they were what is called for int the specs for the bike. If they are correct, then mechanical alignment or wear is certainly suspect.

My 86 Interstate had the same tires, other than the rub area at the edge there isn't any sign of wear, no cracking that would be a sign of old tires. If the right PSI doesn't fix it, I guess new tires are in order.

In case you could not find this:

Tires Manufactured Since 2000

Since 2000, the week and year the tire was produced has been provided by the last four digits of the Tire Identification Number with the 2 digits being used to identify the week immediately preceding the 2 digits used to identify the year.

Example of a tire manufactured since 2000 with the current Tire Identification Number format:
In the example above:
DOT U2LL LMLR 5107
51 Manufactured during the 51st week of the year
07 Manufactured during 2007
