Will front brakes from '82 Aspencade fit '82 Standard?

Postby Erik K » Fri Jun 12, 2015 10:51 am

I have a 1982 Standard that needs front brake calipers rebuilt and I have a 1982 Aspencade that is a parts bike. Will the brakes from the Aspy direct fit the Standard? The brakes on the Aspy appear to be dual piston calipers? The calipers on the Standard appear to be single piston. Anyone know? Ever done that swap? I would think the Aspy brakes would be heavier duty with the added oem weight of the bike and that might give better performance braking on the Standard. Would I have to aIso swap the discs?
I am making the Standard completely standard again. Well mostly... Removed the Jetter fairing, installed factory front turn signals and headlight bucket, removed loud aftermarket pipes (putting the oem quiet pipes from the Aspy on her)
Just trying to unbastardize the old girl. Not show quality, just functionally original mostly.

Yes you can put the Aspencade brakes on the standard. The fork legs on 1980-1982 are the same so the bolt holes are the same for the caliper brackets. 1980 and 81 GL1100 Interstate and Standard have single cylinder calipers, on the 1982 GL1100, all 3 models have 2 piston calipers, the Interstate and the Standard used the same calipers as each other as well as the rotors. The 1982 Aspencade had thicker rotors that were vented in the middle with different calipers with different slot for the rotor and brake pad thickness.
If you have a single piston caliper, you either have an 80-81 standard or someone has changed the calipers to the single piston calipers. Look at the steering neck plate, the model year and date of manufacture is on it.
The Aspencade rotors should be used with the Aspencade calipers as well as the brackets for the calipers as they have a wider slot for the caliper thickness.

As a FYI, 1983 fork legs are different with the Trac anti dive and have different bolt holes for the brake brackets and some differences in calipers.

Thanks newday!
It is an '82 but my buddy has suggested that the brakes are from an '80 or '81 also. I have wondered if the bike had been crashed and repaired at some point in her history due to some welding and painting on the frame in front/above the engine.

I took her out for a ride last night and it is amazing how much lighter it is without the Vetter fairing/ radio/speakers etc. It is way lighter than my '13 F6B also... No where near as fast and sewing machine smooth though!

I think I will do the brake retro from my Aspencade.
