Neutral Switch locaton and Troubleshooting

Postby red skelton » Fri Jun 19, 2015 8:04 pm

I have a very strange problem with my GL1100A 1983.
The neutral light is on even with the ignition switch off. I understand that this is possible if the neutral switch is shorted to ground.
The other thing is when I turn on the ignition switch, nothing is working. No dashboard indicators at all.
Press the start button and the neutral light goes out and the oil light comes on.
The bike engine never turns over.
No power to the starter. Replaced the starter relay. No power to the starter relay either.
I need to know the location of the Neutral Switch so that i can disconnect the wire from it and see what happens.
It maybe a combo problem that the ignition switch and the neutral switch are both bad.
Need assistance in troubleshooting this problem.

Of course I would need replacement parts. If anyone should have the ignition switch and or the neutral switch let me know.

Thanks for everyone assistance. hard to give up on my bike after so many good years.

This aught to be fun...the neutral lamp...it's on with the key out of the bike...Is the bike in neutral?Without turning on the key,if you put the bike in gear, does the neutral lamp stay lit or go off.?

If you pull the clutch lever in, does the neutral light stay on or go off?

This is an odd one. I think no matter what, the ignition switch is going to be involved...unless there is a short somewhere that is possibly connecting an always-hot wire to the ignition? Possibly the regulator?

Try disconnecting the regulator and see if the neutral light goes out. That will rule out it backfeeding the ignition.
