Small oil drip under starter

Postby triketrash » Mon Jun 22, 2015 11:10 pm

Hey Guys- Just noticed a little drip under the left side of the bike. Looking underneath, the small accumulation is midway along the bottom of the starter. I don't see any oil at the head of the starter, so I don't think it's a failed O-ring. I also don't see any oil under the valve cover. Any other potential candidates that you can think of? Again, this is just a small amount, so no biggy, but I hate oil leaks. thanks, Vince

Are you certain it is oil? I ask because the hose from my radiator to the expansion tank was loose and ended up pooling in that exact same spot.

Thanks guys- it's definitely not shifter shaft leakage, and judging by the brownish color it looks like oil and not coolant, but I'll double check.

Is there any way some oil could get down into the starter through the end and leak out the seams? I've had that thing apart a couple of times and maybe I misplaced something?

Not likely..clean if off and spray some flour/power around, run the bike and look for the trail.

Just thought I'd put this thread to rest. I ran the bike 500 miles this past weekend and didn't see a drop of oil. The only thing I can think of was that I had bled the rear brakes a couple of days earlier. I think I overfilled the reservoir at one point, and that brake fluid must have found its way down under the starter. Thanks for your comments- Vince
