Solenoid clicking on 82 aspencade

Postby slowridetak59 » Fri Jun 26, 2015 7:31 am

I just bought an 82 wing that the previous owner put a new starter on. It has been starting great. The yesterday I was going to start it and it Started to turn over then it stopped and the solenoid does nothing but click and even if i dont push the starter button now when I turn the key the pos wire that goes to the solenoid from the battery gets super hot. I tried jumping the wires on the solenoid to see if it would start showing that the solenoid is bad but nothing but sparks the battery is fully charged. Is the starter locked up? Any ideas greatly appreciated thanks

Good morning slowridetak, there could be several issues with your bike and the starter. Battery seems not to be an issue.
Go to this forum and look up how to do articles and look at how to adjust your valves. This will show you where to go to insure you do not have a problem with your valves hitting a piston. You should be able to turn the engine smoothly. I believe you use a 17mm box end wrench to remove the cover and 17mm socket to turn the shaft bolt (clock wise) if smooth turning then probably the actual starter. There're is also how to remove and clean your starter in how to do articles.

It could be a number of things. First thing to check (and the cheapest) is to see if your bike is hydrolocked. Remove all four spark plugs and hit the starter - if it is, gasoline will shoot out of the spark plug holes (and I mean shoot - like 10+ feet, so do it outside).

Let us know if this fixes it, and get back to us.

If it shoots gas out,you better kill the ignition with the kill switch.Ya don't want a flame thrower.

Sorry took me so long to get back to you all I tried pulling the plugs and still nothing but I haven't moved on to the next suggestion but it still bothers me that with the ignition key on the positive side of the battery wire gets super hot without touching the starter button. Maybe I'm thinking too much about how a car is. I'm very mechanically inclined and have worked on many different types of 4 wheeled vehicles. But on a car the first thing I would check would be the starter. I'll be honest other than doing oil and filter changes and plug replacements I haven't done much mechanical on bikes at all that's why I try to always buy a good shop repair manual for what I may own. If there are more suggestions just let me know but today I am unable to go on to the next suggestions you have already given me. Which any and all replies are greatly appreciated more than you'll ever know.

with plugs out you should be able to easily turn the engine by using the "adjusting the valves" set. it sounds like something is preventing the starter from spinning. juice going to starter but no movement for some reason.

Well, here's the update I went on my original hunch and pulled the starter out, and that was a project lol but anyway I pulled it out tried turning the shaft by hand and no go so I hooked it up to the wings battery with jumper cables and lots of sparks but it didn't budge then I looked the starter over and found the sticker and it says made in tiawan so in my history of purchasing items electrical that's not usually a good sign. But I'm new to the Goldwings is that the same case? Very interested in everyone's input concerning buying stuff from there for these awesome bikes

completely froze? it sounds like something has jammed, you are probably aware they are pretty easy to take apart and repair. I can't remember for sure but I think I purchased a rebuild kit from bike bandit for around $50. I had same issue with a 82. cleaned everything up installed new kit and it was like new. yes it was also from Taiwan. this is also the orginal starter. I would rebuild vs purchase new. just me

Thank you wingman 12 I appreciate all your info concerning this issue. I'll definitely go with the rebuild because I do know they are expensive. Hopefully get this fixed and I did find out before this happened that I'm getting spark to the #2 and #4 plugs where it shoots gas out the tail pipe so I'll have to give the carburetors a good looking at. Do you think the floats are gummed up or what is your opinion on why it's getting too much gas on that side

how long has the been sitting and not running. any idea?. often times po don't store and probably treat the fuel before storage. I would try fresh fuel with 1 can of seafoam. I am going to guess varnish in carbs causing floats to stick open. seafoam will clear out that varnish

Last time it was plated was 2011 but that can mean it was started every so often or had never been started since then. So your guess is as good as mine. I'll try the seafoam and go from there. It just makes me feel like crap when people don't take care of something as nice as these wings are. I mean yes it's not like it's one of the newer ones but still it just saddens me when anybody let's any type of older motor vehicle just set. I'll stop my rambling lol thanks for the input

Thanks for the progress reports, everyone is always interested. I will mention this before someone else does, if you don't have any idea of When the timing belts were changed, you should definitely consider changing them before you do any serious riding. Since the bike is down waiting for the starter rebuild parts it will give you time to insure you protect your engine from a catastrophe breakage if the old belts break because of age.

To be honest I had already had already done a lot of research on the wings and already have done changed the timing belts on it. But thanks for the heads up on that :D
