Loss of 4th gear???

Postby jimradford » Mon Jun 29, 2015 3:07 pm

It began with the 1982 GL1100 jumping out of fourth gear. Now, 4th gear does not engage, and if you try, it sounds like the bike is coming apart, and rattles all the up to the handlebars at the clutch lever. 1,2,3 and 5th are fine...

Any ideas? suggestions? Location, near Nashville, Tennessee. Thanks.

Most likely worn or (hopefully not) broken dogs on fourth gear in the transmission.

Change your oil, and hold a strong magnet in the oil as it is pouring out of the crankcase. I suspect you're going to find a lot of metal shavings.

Broken dogs:

Thanks for quick reply.

I did change the oil....No shavings or parts.
