Blown 10a fuse that runs to turn signal canceling unit

Postby SanChico83 » Thu Jul 02, 2015 3:16 pm

Hi all. I have a fuse that keeps going and I have chased everything I can seem to follow and essentially what happens is when I turn the ignition to "on" the fuse pops. The fuse the pops is the 10a (second in from the right) that runs directly to the turn signal cancelling uni. The acc and park position of the ignition does not cause the fuse to go. I have pulled apart the turn signal hand control and cleaned it out. There seems to be no problems there. My thought is the ignition switch. I have looked for shorts, or bad wires, followed wiring diagrams through the speedo and tach lights, and all seem good. I am at a loss.

Also as I recall, the cancler module can be unplugged without affecting the turn signal operation. It just won't auto cancle.Does your bike have the turn signal that pushes in to cancle or manually operated. The manual one has a solenoid in the bottom of the turn signal assembly. If its bad/shorted/chafed wire, the cancler module would blow the fuse when power is turned on.

I bought this bike from a guy who put it down. Fairing was wrecked and one side bag as well. I decided to pull them off so I have put on replacement turn signals and brake lights. No additional accessories though.

Also, the canceler in the signal control was unplugged, but the fuse still continued to pop.

New development: now my left turn signal works fine, where my right signal does not go on and the indicator light is extremely dim.

With no "push to cancle" on the turn signal switch, the auto cancel is done by the mechanical release solenoid in the bottom of the switch assembly..when it's activated,it releases the lever lock and the spring pushes the switch back to the center position. Also as I recall, that solenoid is energized when the key is first turned on...On mine, that worked, when I turned the key on there was a click sound from the switch cluster.....If the solenoid is shorted out, pinched wires,it would blow the fuse...It's also possible the cancel module shorted internal...Just unplug it to check this.
The power wire feeding the release solenoid is blue/black..Power feeds the cancer on a brown/white wire.Green is ground.
By the way, there should not be a bulge on the side of the module...

Also,if you apply volts to the blue/black wire feeding the solenoid,be quick..don't hold power too long..the solenoid is not continous duty..It will overheat and burn up...it is suppose to just click.

Thanks for you help. I pulled apart the turn signal switch. Pulled out the small copper piece that connects to the canceler and left the one the works the turn signals. Turned on the ignition and no blown fuse. The board that all the wires to the signal and canceler must be fouled. Wires and connections looked good, but that clearly is the culprit. My last issue is the right turn signal not going while the left does. My thoughts are that same board and I will be cleaning and resoldering if necessary the wires into the switch. Thanks so much for you help!

Keep is posted.Did you get the cancler module unplugged?you mentioned that "the cancer in the signal control" was unplugged....Do you mean the angle sensor on the bottom of the steering or the small box near the air cleaner.?
