can i replace a dual piston rear caliper with a single

Postby halcombrick » Thu Jul 02, 2015 7:30 pm

Hey guys my 82 has a bad rear brake caliper. I'm having to ride with front brakes only. I can't find any dual piston rear calipers but plenty of single piston ones. A few people have told me that a single piston caliper will bolt right on. But I know you guys have more knowledge than most people. Will it bolt right on? Thanks guys for any advise.

What's wrong with the caliper? Is it so bad that it can't be rebuilt?

IF your rear caliper is totally not rebuildable, there are 2 listings on eBay for an '82 dual piston rear caliper. they are being sold by the same seller,(woodbine cycle salvage) for the same price. NOTE.......the listings on both say these will NOT fit the 80-81 GL1100. they are for the 82 and the 83 aspencades and interstates only. one listing is here....http://www.ebay.com/itm/82-83-HONDA-int ... f2&vxp=mtr

and the other one is here.....http://www.ebay.com/itm/82-83-HONDA-int ... a7&vxp=mtr

one has 62xxx miles on it, and the other one has 48xxx miles on it.

hope this helps ya.

It looks like you can get most of the rebuild parts from Honda, except for the entire caliber.

Wing...I'm mostly curious as a couple of my buddies said a single would bolt right on and even a dual off the front. I just wanted to know for sure.

Another bad eBay listing!

If the caliper fits an Aspencade, it won't fit an Interstate. And vice versa. All to do with the thickness of the disc.

Rebuild kit for the dual piston caliper here:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-83-GL1100 ... 2ee3756168
( yes I know it says Aspencade but the pistons, and therefore the seals, are the same diameter as your Interstate.

Stainless steel pistons here:

Hal, I am sure you have to rebuild your rear master cylinder, replace the hose and rebuild your rear caliper. It will take a little time but worth it. I think you can get everything including the pads thru bike bandit. But I would recommend the pads as a Honda purchase, they cost more but last longer than generic pads. :D :D

that's true, they wont fit the fronts because the front rotors on the aspencade are wider, but i thought that was only for the front calipers. is the rotor on the back also wider?

Actually, I'm guilty of misinformation I'm sorry.

The 82 Aspy has a vented disc, 10mm thick, so won't fit the Interstate.
But the 83 Aspy went back to a normal 7mm disc, so as far as that goes, one off that would fit the Interstate. But the Interstate and the Aspy for that 83 year have different part numbers for the complete caliper. I don't know what the differences are.

that's how i got my brand new, never used OEM front rotors. someone bought them and tried to put them on his 83 interstate and the calipers wouldn't fit because the interstate rotors are thinner. the 83 aspencade rotors are vented and finned in the center. i got both rotors for $100.00 with free shipping 8-). i didn't need them, but at that price i couldn't resist buying them. i know they are VERY expensive if bought from mother Honda or from a parts warehouse, IF you can get them.

i still have my old pair of 83 aspencade rotors that i'll let go at a reasonable price if anyone's interested.
