83 wing diff leak

Postby Newbie wingrider » Thu Jul 02, 2015 10:23 pm

hi every one,
i have a leak at the rear diff, its coming from the bottom of the diff, out of the guard. is there a common seal that leaks, going by the honda parts list it looks like a few seals, #31 #32 #29 and #35
there is one on the pinion shaft, is that one pretty easy to replace? and the other ones are by the ring housing. i kinda wanted to get all or the common ones to replace, before i tear it down, so i wont have any down time. also what kind of oil goes in the diff.? i dont have a manual, i need to get one..any help would be great, thank you Derek.

Good evening Newbie, happy 4th holiday. I am assuming you are talking about a leak on your final drive?? If so it is considerably cheaper to buy one
Off eBay than rebuild it. For about $10 you can pick up the proper final drive oil at your local dealer.

Have you taken the tire off and examined the final drive? It is unusual that you are having leakage. What is your mileage? What do your drive splines look like? I Had to replace mine at 142,000 because I used the incorrect lubercant on the final drive splines. I was able to got on eBay, the final drive, the final drive spline and the drive shaft for $49.00 plus $20 shipping. They were in perfect condition, just needed cleaning to my anal specs. My food for thought for this day. :D :D

I just bought it, and the speedo was inop, at 72k, working now. How would you know if your getting something better and not worse. No I have not removed the tire yet..to inspect..I just want to fix the leak. For now.

I understand. When we buy used we are taking chances, but most times the repairs are more of an irritation than anything else. Just so that I under stand what is leaking and where, is it possible for you to attach a picture ?
:)
