Starting issues

Postby 19GoldWing83 » Tue Jul 07, 2015 1:49 pm

Lately, I've been having starting issues with my 83 Interstate. When trying to start, the starter seems sluggish, then after a few tries, finally starts. Yesterday, trying to start, holding the start button, all the electrics quit, and noticed smoke coming from the battery. I popped off the cover, and noticed that the positive terminal was melted! Any one have an idea on what's going on?
Thanks for any info you can give me. Pete.

You have likely built up some dirt or corrosion within the battery connector or the battery cable itself. This causes resistance, which limits the amount of power that can get through to the starter. Resistance to large amounts of current (i.e. the amount of current used to start a bike) also causes heat, which would explain the smoke.

Take the positive wire off your battery terminal and examine it closely for corrosion, dirt or other contaminants. Make sure the connector on the end of the wire is mounted solidly to the wire, and that corrosion hasn't built up where it mounts.

Less common is a fault inside the battery itself, causing similar problems and symptoms. I would check the wires and connectors first.

I will add that if you do find corrosion of any kind it is possible that the corrosion can actually get inside the cable where you can't see it. If you clean the cable and you still have the same problem it is possible that you can't see where it's corroded. This happened to me on a car and it drove me crazy.
Thanks to all who answer and help. It is greatly appreciated!

Went to my Honda dealer to order new cable, but unfortunately, they are no longer available. Looking for some place that can make the cables. I'll keep you posted.
