Wobble over 80 mph

Postby Zurcad » Sun Jul 04, 2010 11:03 am

Hi all my bike is a 83 gl110 striptted just lots of chrome. It has 56,000 k on it and it's had this wobble over 80 , but it won't do it all the time and it get worse when making turns on highway.I've raced my budy's on there HD's over 120 lol and not got it then next time it has it. I've installed new head bearings with races and wheel bearings seem tight . The tech that mount and balance my new tires said they seem fine. I've had other Gl1100's that did this as well. I was wondering is there a stearring head shock for these bikes or what am I missing ? Just another thot if I let the bars go the bike allways wants to go left and this is at any speed.

I had exactly this problem on my 1100, and it turned out that the swingarm pivot pins were a) installed backwards (left side on right, right side on left), and torqued incorrectly (too loose). This gave the swingarm too much lateral free play, and at speeds over 75 or so, I got a weave. Swapping the pivot pins to where they were supposed to be and torquing them correctly fixed the problem.

Need to check rear wheel as well as the front, bearings, steering head, tires..for defects cord separation, tread issues..cupping etc. if you jack up the front of the bike and slowly turn the handle bars can you feel any notch in the turning with no weight on the front tire??
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

I really don't feel anything as I have replaced stearing head bearing with races and both tires are brand new late last year.the swing arm feels tight even after I removed tire for replacement. I have had a lot of people tell me that is the problem. The bike feels weird when leaning left as if something shifting and no feeling of this to right. I gues I will try swingarm parts then.

Before replacing swingarm parts, try just torquing the pivot pins to the correct values.
