Starting and Running Problems

Postby michaeltrimboli » Sun Jul 12, 2015 4:39 am

Hello All, I hope someone can help me. I just got a 1980 GL1100I I found out it would not start. I am able to get it started by bypassing the solenoid but it wont stay running unless I hold the clutch in. Now when I hold the clutch in it will start and stay running but if I release the clutch it will not stay running even if it is in neutral. Also if I put it in gear and try to release the clutch it will also not stay running. Does any body know what the problem might be?

Sounds like an issue with the clutch safety feature IE it won't start in gear w/o the clutch being pulled in..but the other problem doesn't fit??? cutting out after it's started. Two possible things to check the bushing in the clutch mount could be worn and so not activating properly or the circuit/diode is bad..but that might be on gl1000 only I not sure. Clutch dragging so at low idle it stops the engine?? Could be two things are causing your problems. Do you have a OEM Honda shop manual, if not get one..you can download them for free on various sites. Or if you want a hard copy they are for sale too new and used.

Ps I think I have an extra one lying around $45 including shipping an it's yours.
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83

FAIR WINDS,

Sounds like maybe the microswitch safety itself is bad.

Thank you for the responses.....The problem is fixed..I was working on the bike and apparently I failed to re secure a ground wire. Once I made sure the ground wire had a clean secure connection... the problem was resolved.
Thanks again!!!!!!
