81 interstate

Postby fourcarbs » Sun Jul 04, 2010 1:17 pm

Hi I am not sure if I have all the parts to re-install my rear axle, can you tell me how many washers there should be and exactly where they go? Thank you very much!

OK, thank you!I found a big washer on the left side of the axle, not pictured in the parts diagram (rear wheel),so I guess I'll leave it out.

Make sure you are looking at the correct parts diagram for your year and model of bike - the axle/washer layout did change from year to year for some models.

Don't leave the washer out. I just went thru this with my 81. The big washer goes on the outside of the caliper bracket, between
the axle shoulder and caliper bracket.

1981 rear axle left side
1981 rear axle left side
here is a picture of my 1981 GL 1100 rear axle.... note: the pinch bolt is loosened and almost removed in this picture, NOT as it is supposed to be for riding....

Any noise coming from rear end should be checked out ASAP as the bearings will make "similar" noises when they are dried out and failing. Replace them while rear wheel is off bike, rather than waiting for them to fail while a few hundred miles from home. Does the noise come from the wheel hub or the rear end?? either is not normal.

I had a creaking noise like that as well coming from my rear end. I drained and replaced the rear gear oil, and replaced the wheel bearings, and the noise was gone. I don't know which of the two solved it - I'd bet it was the bearings, but I can't say for sure.
