Where did I go wrong???

Postby tvtruth » Sat Jul 18, 2015 5:26 pm

So....I pulled the motor on my 81 and did the sprague clutch service since I was getting no response from the starter. No real issues getting the engine in and out but now I have two issues? 1. The drive shaft seems to not be connected to the rear wheel any more. (Yes, I did get the circlip back in on the connection to the U-joint - fun btw) However, before the engine removal, when I turned the back tire it did turn the u-joint. Now, that is not the case. - help. 2. I'm not getting any reading on my temp gauge now although I'm pretty certain I made all of the connections. Ideas?
BTW - the sprague clutch service worked like a dream and the engine turned over and fired up immediately after install.

Rear splines in the shaft not engaged?? If the wheel is turning and the knuckle is not that's the only connection I can think of..or the shaft is broken??? You could pull the wheel off and turn the shaft my hand and see if the engine end/knuckle turns???

temp?? does your fuel gauge work? if not your 7v regulator is out. Iif it's works I'd guess a ground is not tight or the wire has corrosion.

If you turn back wheel is the drive shaft turning at the u joint up near rear of motor.

Is the shaft between the U joint and the final drive turning when you turn the rear wheel?

Is your fuel gauge working correctly?

OK, as far as the temp gauge then, you've got a disconnect somewhere between the temperature gauge and the sensor, or the sensor itself is disconnected, or damaged.

The shaft should definitely be turning when you turn the rear wheel. You're going to have to pull the final drive off the bike and find out what's wrong. Check that the male splines in the final drive are turning when the rear wheel turn:

Here is the update on the repair, thanks for all of your input. I pulled the rear wheel and final drive assembly and discovered that the circlip that holds in the rear of the drive shaft into the coupler was just laying in the coupler. Evidently someone had been in there before and wasn't able to get the circlip on correctly. It is a tricky deal to get it on the shaft. Evidently when I pulled the engine and moved the u-jooint around to get the engine out I pulled the shaft forward just enough to disengage it from the rear coupler. It's always something right? Anyway, my brother-in-law helped me fabricate some long circlip pliers out of some long needle nose from Harbor Freight. Job done - bike runs great.
As for the temp sensor - there was a wire with a bad bullet connector under the right side of the engine. People - please use solder.
