Fork oil level

Post by willy b » Wed Jul 22, 2015 9:54 pm

Have a bit of seepage on front forks - '82 Aspencade. How can I tell how much fork oil is in them? Seems soft stopping, so I'm pretty sure they are down, just don't know how much. Don't want to disassemble if I don't have to, just want to top them up for now.

I would drain them both, then you can fill them up to the correct level. no way to tell if they are low or overfull.. Empty via the drain bolt, then you cal also fill via this with a syringe, or remove the fork caps and refill from the top (after putting the drain bolt back in of course)

Hello willy b, if you google ( fork oil level on 1982 gl1100) you will be able to find your answer without tearing down your forks. There is a way to measure the volume of oil without starting from scratch. Good luck :D :D

My simple mind says, if you have seepage, fix that first.

Have plans for that next weekend. Just wanted to get them topped up for a ride this weekend, and ordering parts on monday. Its not bad enough to call it a leak, but it does need to be tasken care of soon.

Fork oil has a bad influence on Brake pads so be very careful riding anywhere. I would get the leak corrected as soon as possible even it means not riding for a while. But that is just me.
