Top End air pressure test , 83 GL 1100I

Postby velvetrider » Tue Jul 28, 2015 11:37 am

In talking about my problems with Blackvelvet I heard that I should preform an "air pressure" leak down test on each cylinder. The fellow, a former mechanic, said that he made his tester by
knocking out the ceramic from a spark plug and drilling/tapping to accept pressure gauge and air valve. He went on to say that this device will yield all kinds of information. ie. exactly where the head gasket is leaking, if at all. I do not plan on making one of these. I am curious though, does anybody else know of this technique.? He also pointed out that if water is flowing from my overflow pipe when the system builds pressure, that I might just have a bad radiator cap. Not the case as I have a new cap, replaced with OEM cap last year. A compression test showed about 115 psi per cyl. with 8/9 psi difference. The tester was difficult, rubber tip was decayed. and I am not sure of the numbers. I have oil in the water, No water in the oil however. She still runs good but looses water quickly, an overheats. Thanks for all the help and may your rides all be excellent. :)

did you check by chance to see if anything coming out of your weep hole on the water pump? are you noticing any antifreeze leakage on the ground anywhere? :D :D

I'm Not an expert engine repair person, but it sounds like you have a blown head gasket. Check your plugs and see if 2 on either the left or right side are unusually clean, which lets you know you are pushing antifreeze thru that side. You should be able to detect the odor of antifreeze from the carbon inside the tail pipe . I am a little concerned about the low compression. Is this bike new to you? What is the miles? Any prior history available? Yes a good air pressure test will let you know if valve stuck open, or bad head gaskets etc. you will have to get a few more professionals involved. Best of luck. :D :D

Yep I think the same thing, I have replaced it once 25k and 3 yrs ago. I got other "projects" going but Blackvelvet is next. I have to work on carbs too. I will post for opinions on where the best parts come from... Thanks again,,
Geoff.
