Your thoughts on leather saddlebags on GL1100

Postby auctioneeral » Thu Jul 30, 2015 7:37 am

Your thoughts on leather saddlebags on a GL1100 standard. I been looking at Bilt saddlebags. I need something to carry lunch box in so i can ride bike to work. Was thinking sissybar bag, but i would have to mount it so it sits on seat. Because I dont have a luggage rack on it, just sissybar. I been looking for a rack but no luck on finding any.

I would also go for it, the naked one anyway will need some kind of storage and carrying compartments. :D :D

I recently bought these for my 76 GL. At $75, they were worth every penny.

I made my own mounts out of aluminum, but they offer
a "universal" mount for another $20.
I'd post a pic of my bike, but I haven't taken any since I added the bags.

I like the leather bags in the 1000 and the naked 1100s. Be sure and get a larger size. If too small they look weird.

I have a nice chrome rack, and two primed (sloppy job-I don't know what color underneath) bags and lids-no key, no trunk, no bottom brackets. The signals are there....I'm in VA.

Personally I prefer textile bags over leather, waterproofing is better and in some cases the warranty is much better.

I would suggest you look into the Chase Harper bags, they are not cheap but the lifetime warranty works. We had a pair on my wifes Virago for years with no problem and then one day she did something wrong and the corner of one got chewed up. I called Chase Harper and they shipped us a new set to replace the damaged ones. Still have those bags.

I seen an early Wing with the Samsonite system, actually looked good. Tho the rider was wearing a sport coat & pants.

Also seen (cheap) leather bags on an early Wing. Looked odd and sad, the bags were drooping quite a bit.

There are some vary nice leather bags out there, but, I bet to get real leather (not pleather) bags that don't sag, wouldn't be cheap!.....that don't help much...just saying....

In 1988 purchased used 81 goldwing, the previous owner had a vetter top box and Chase Harper soft saddle bags . We took many trips with that wing and the soft bags worked great, just unsnap two clips on each side and carry into motel. You could pack alot of clothing in each bag.
