Timing Belt??

Hi -
I have a 1983 GL1100i. It has 59,700 miles on it. I am the 3rd owner.
The question /problem is that suddenly the engine seemed to be "missing" while accelerating. Sounds fine at idle. I have replaced the coils and plugs recently (last fall). However, this problem came on while I was on a ride.
I did check and verify a spark at each cylinder. It appears to be good. Carbs appear to ok too.
I personally am unaware if the timing belt has ever been changed and am not sure if this is causing the issue. I then checked the plugs again and found that #4 appeared to have more than normal carbon buildup and all others were ok.
Any help here is appreciated.

I would start off by giving the bike a complete tune up, and a service.

New plugs, air/filters, oil, valve adjustment, compression test, carb sync etc... and then maybe look at how the bike is running.
If it is still missing - then maybe you need to do a carb strip and clean.

How long have you owned it? What have you done to it since owning it? Any service history?

If you don't know when the timing belts were changed - then I would recommend replacing them.

On an '83 with no knowledge of the history for the timing belts it would be a cheap insurance policy to change them. NAPA auto parts can supply either NAPA or GATES (same belt) timing belts for a lot less than OEM (about $20 each and you need two).

My GF just bought an '83 Aspy and that's one of the things we have on the "get it done soon" list....As soon as she decides if it's too much bike or not. There are DIY articles on how to do the change.

If a belt breaks, the engine is an "interference" engine. i.e. the valves and pistons interfere with each other (HIT) and that is BAD

I am in my 3rd season of ownership. I have cleaned carbs last year and had them synced. Plugs, wires and coil are new last fall. I have a K&N air filter and it was just cleaned this week. (Keep in mind, due to the great weather here in Chicago this year, I have less then 500 miles on for the season). When it was running perfectly a couple of weeks ago, there was a very slight ticking but all fluid levels were normal. I chalked it up to an exhaust leak as it did not affect performance.

Does this maybe sound like a timing belt ready to go? I probably will change it anyway, just because.

Run some fuel injector cleaner through it..or I think you guys call it seafoam.

I also run some lead replacement additive.

Drain each float bowl and see what comes out (fuel tap off of course), and see if you can measure the output volume (bike on centre stand), might give you a clue if there is too little or too much in one carb..
