I'm going in. New head gaskets...finally

Postby velvetrider » Wed Aug 26, 2015 10:11 pm

After a blazing summer the weather has finally turned. Got "Blackvelvet" on lift. Engine guards off.
Timing belt covers removed, exhaust lowered. Tomorrow is TDC time and remove the heads. I got Honda Shop manual, studied alot, have 2 previous gaskets experience, and I am still skeptical about the whole thing. Wish me luck,,1 question,,I really do not want to remove the cams. and anybody really knowledgeable about lapping the valves? Thanks. :geek:

Hey Velvet Rider,
I just did mine this past winter. I found the job to be simple, but some pointers.
I would take the heads in and get the valve guides done. I didn't and will be pulling it all apart again this winter.
Lapping the valves is very easy and youtube has many videos to show you how it is done.
Oh and don't forget to set the timing before you restart it.
Have fun,
GG

Thanks Gristlehead. I have found this to be a ass kicking job. Pins got stuck in head,,2 machine shops later, back at it. All doing OK till belt pulleys will not line up and question now arises about wheather I am at TDC or TDX.? I lapped my valves, did not mess with the valve guides. Why do you have to replace yours ? What is the "tell" ?

Mine smokes at start up. I have been told that I should have done the guides.
I put no smoke in the oil. It seems to have helped.
There are lines on the pulleys and heads to help line them up.
I didn't set my timing properly the first time and broke a valve. Don't make the same mistake.

oh man I feel your pain. I bent one a couple 5 yrs ago, putting a new Head gasket in. My helper had stuffed rages in plug holes and did not remove um when I turned it over to set valves. I could not find a valve back then. I got a NASCAR friend to straighten it out.. . Now I got a whole new problem,, I can't get full TDC rotation on crank shaft .. See new post.
