Oil Leak somewhere

Postby pschweitzer » Sun Aug 30, 2015 7:47 pm

I met some friends Saturday night. My buddy who is a former wing owner looked at my left boot and asked if I had an oil leak. I have not noted any drips under the bike. The only thing I could think of is the outboard oil seal for the rocker arms. I checked all the bolts on the valve covers and also the seal cover in front of the shifter. I didn't notice any oil under the area when I checked things out. Is there anything down there that may only leak under load? I am not losing oil so other than my riding boots are getting an extra waterproof treatment It would be nice to figure this out. If it is coming out near the exhaust it might be burning off before I stop.

Thanks guys. I changed the oil seals when I did the head work last year for just this reason. I'll check and see if this one just didn't seat properly and also check the shifter. It is probably like one drop of oil but that can go pretty far in making a mess on your boot.

Spray everything clean down there with brake cleaner, then powder things with talcum powder. That will quickly show where the oil leak is coming from.

I just replaced the valve cover gasket on an '01 Saturn SL1. If I'd read this thread beforehand, I would have asked the parts counter man for a "outboard oil seal for the rocker arms" just to watch as he tried to figure out if the problem was with him or me
Sorry, pschweitzer, but I thought that was funny and I'm a d*ck. :D

Found it! It's the valve cover gasket. It must not have seated right when I took it off last to torque the head bolts. It is just a slight seepage. I'll order a new one and replace it since it's probably pinched.
