Metal shavings

Hello, rebuilding the carbs off my '83 1100 and found about 6 very small metal shavings inside the carb under the vacuum piston, in the air chamber. Where could these have come from? Please excuse my ignorance

Just a hunch but my 82 Yamaha also collected some metal or metal like shavings in the fuel path, float bowls and other various places the fuel flowed through. In my case the metal flake red paint on the tank had some overspray in the tank itself that eventually was dissolved and the flakes in the paint began to show up in the float bowls. I thought it odd and concerning to say the least until I figured out what I was seeing was short lived and seemingly none metallic. Again its just an thought, in my case I rinsed out my tank and fuel lines, and put a filter in the fuel line and never noticed it again. It maybe completely off track but if you can't see any scoring on the moving carb parts then its either from the gas, the tank or the fuel pump. Perhaps sampling some fuel from different locations will indicate where the flakes do and do not exist prior to reaching the carbs.

Yeah, guess you're right, it'd have to come from before the motor...that's good! I'll keep my eyes peeled whilst going through the motor. Thanks!
